"Hip-Hop and the arts changed my life, now I use it to change the lives of our youth."

Chris Cortez

CEO & FOUNDER
HOUSTON HEALTHY HIP-HOP LLC

MY STORY

My journey with Hip-Hop began in 1998, when I was an 8th-grade student at Spring Oaks Middle School and had the opportunity to be part of one of the first in-school Hip-Hop dance programs.

During that time, I was fortunate to learn from Kathy Wood, founder and artistic director of FLY Dance Company. Kathy taught and educated me on stage etiquette, performance skills, and what it meant to prepare both mentally and physically for the stage. She spent countless hours helping me grow as a dancer and performer.

As a young person, seeing such a positive environment made a lasting impact on me. It inspired me to reach back into my community and create a program similar to the dance class Kathy had created for us. My passion for Hip-Hop culture led me on a quest to provide hope and health to our youth.

Since 1998, I have remained active and internationally recognized in the B-Boy community, performing, competing, instructing, and educating young people about the positive effects of Hip-Hop culture, which embodies the art of movement and expression. I have also organized 12 dance events and competitions in Spring Branch, the community where I grew up, to support the community and bring a positive message to the next generation.

For nine consecutive years, I was also a member of the world-famous Houston Rockets Launch Crew. Through the Houston Rockets organization, I had the opportunity to travel to Beijing and Guangzhou for the 2010 Global Games. I also performed at the 2013 Global Games in Manila, Philippines, and Taipei, Taiwan.

In 2009, I launched Houston Healthy Hip-Hop. What started as my after-school program, “Hip-Hop 4 Homework,” continued to grow and expand throughout the Houston area. By 2026, Houston Healthy Hip-Hop has grown into a creative enrichment organization offering Hip-Hop, Cheer, Baile Folklórico, Martial Arts, Art, Family & Staff Engagement, and Entertainment Services.

Another important part of my story brings everything full circle.

In 1998, FLY Dance Company was the company that inspired me as an 8th-grade student and helped shape my journey as a dancer and performer. Years later, I had the opportunity to help bring that same company back to life.

In 2012, my business partners Adam Quiroz, George Casco, and I, with the blessing and support of Kathy Wood, brought FLY Dance Company out of hiatus and continued the legacy of the company that had inspired me as a young dancer.

For me, this was truly a full-circle moment. The company that helped inspire my journey became a company that I had the opportunity to help carry forward.

FLY continues to be known for its high-energy performances, creative staging, and unique blend of Hip-Hop and contemporary dance.

Today, FLY is advised by renowned choreographer and Hip-Hop legend Rennie Lorenzo Harris. FLY will also partner with symphonies across the United States and is partnering with the United States Embassy to take its programs and concerts overseas.

One of the special moments in FLY’s history was FLY Dance Company Day in Houston, officially recognized on September 30th. We were honored to receive an official proclamation recognizing FLY Dance Company Day, celebrating the company’s 25 years of creativity, dedication, and impact on the Houston arts community. This recognition at Miller Outdoor Theatre was a special reminder of how far FLY has come and the legacy that continues to inspire the next generation.

From an 8th-grade student discovering Hip-Hop in 1998, to creating Houston Healthy Hip-Hop in 2009, and helping bring FLY Dance Company back to life in 2012, every chapter has been connected by one thing:

The belief that the Hip-Hop discipline can create opportunity, build confidence, and change lives.

WHY I STARTED HHH

When I look back, I realize that everything connects.

It started with a dance class in 1998.
A teacher believed in me.
I discovered something I was passionate about.

That passion gave me confidence and purpose.
And eventually, I wanted to give that same opportunity to someone else.

That is the heart of Houston Healthy Hip-Hop.

I believe every young person deserves an opportunity to discover what they are good at, express themselves creatively, build confidence, and have positive people around them who believe in their potential.

I started Houston Healthy Hip-Hop because Hip-Hop gave me an opportunity—and I wanted to make sure the next generation had that same opportunity.

HONORING
THEIR LEAGACY

My journey would not be complete without honoring Kathy and Michael Wood.

Kathy Musick Wood, Founder and Artistic Director of FLY Dance Company, was one of my greatest mentors. As a young dancer, she taught me discipline, stage etiquette, performance, and the importance of believing in yourself.

Alongside Kathy was her husband, Michael Wood, who was the brains behind the operations that helped bring FLY’s vision to life.

Together, they created something bigger than a dance company—they created a legacy, a culture, and opportunities for young people.

The lessons they gave me continue to influence the work I do today through Houston Healthy Hip-Hop.

Rest in Peace, Kathy & Michael Wood. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on.

Thank you, Kathy and Michael, for helping shape my journey.
